Common questions
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Every 10 years, or sooner if they fail testing. The expiry or manufacture date is usually printed on the back.
What are a landlord's smoke alarm obligations in NSW?
Landlords must make sure smoke alarms are installed and working, check them each year, and have hardwired alarms repaired or replaced by a licensed electrician.
Should my alarms be interconnected?
It's strongly recommended. When one alarm detects smoke, they all sound, giving everyone in the home more time to get out.
What's the difference between photoelectric and ionisation alarms?
Photoelectric alarms respond faster to the slow, smouldering fires most common in homes, and are the type recommended by Australian fire services.
